Buonarroti, Philippe

Buonarroti, Philippe
(1761-1837)
   revolutionary
of italian origin, Philippe Buonarroti was born in Pisa and received an education in law and music in Florence. He became a journalist and bookseller and, with the advent of the French revolution of 1789, moved to Corsica, where he would later denounce the Corsican nationalists to the National Convention. He was appointed by maximilien Robespierre to oversee the occupied Ligurian territories. With françois-noël babeuf, Buonarroti was also one of the leaders of the Conspiracy of Equals (1796). He was imprisoned until 1806, after which he settled in Geneva and Brussels. He had a brief association with the italian nationalist and revolutionary Giuseppe Mazzini, but they broke over ideological and methodological differences. Concerned with the social problems of a growing industrialized society in France, Buonarroti organized such new groups as the société des Familles to address these issues. In 1828, he published La Conspiration pour l'Égalité that would later influence louis-auguste blanqui.
